Motoring experts at StressFreeCarRental.com have emphasised major concerns for van drivers, as overloading vehicles and driving for long periods without breaks lead to hefty fines of up to £300 and points on their licences.

As well as resulting in these penalties, the increase in stopping distances can wear out tyres and suspension, compromising the vehicle’s safety. Each van has a specific weight capacity depending on its make and model, so it’s essential for drivers to know their vehicle’s limits.

The car rental company also warned that driving for too long without taking the necessary breaks is another serious issue. Legally, drivers should not exceed ten hours of driving per day and must take regular breaks. Ignoring this can result in substantial fines and endanger road safety.

Motorists are also being cautioned against leaving their engines running while stationary, as this can lead to on-the-spot fines. Drivers should turn off their engines when making a delivery, picking up a colleague, or stopping to make a call.

John Charnock, CEO of StressFreeCarRental.com warned: “Van drivers can face significant motoring fines for various offences from speeding to overloading their vehicles, all of which compromise road safety. Overloading a van, speeding, loading and unloading, leaving the engine running while stationary could all see you land a fine or penalty points, which is the last thing any van driver wants.”

“The fines aren’t just about punishment, they should be seen as a deterrent, encouraging drivers to stick to the rules of the road. It’s not just about their safety, but the safety of other road users too.”
